Interplast Australia & New Zealand (Interplast)

Interplast was established in 1983, by Rotarians and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons,
as a Non- for- Profit Company’. Rotary, with equal share holding with the College, are directly
involved in the management, direction and the funding of this extraordinary voluntary organisation.



Interplast sends teams of qualified surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied professionals
to countries in our region, being countries with inadequate medical services. They donate
their time, free of charge, to provide high quality, free, plastic and reconstructive surgery,
and allied services (speech/ hand therapy etc.) to persons who would not have access to,
and or alternatively, could not afford such treatment.

In addition to treatment services, Interplast delivers free training and mentoring, for overseas
professionals and trainees – not only during operations, but also by separate programs locally
or in Australia and NZ. This improves local health services and self- sufficiency. All these
services are documented and evaluated.

The medical conditions are congenital and acquired and include burns, contractures; cleft
lip/ palate; trauma related injuries; tumours and many other conditions including,
hypospadias and mainly involve young persons.

These programs are well planned and involve the agreement of Governments, Hospitals,
medical professionals, universities/ training colleges and A&NZ professional bodies and
orgs, (including Children First and ROMAC, to whom some patients are referred by Interplast
surgeons and often treated in Australia by the same surgeons).

Rotarians across all Districts in A&NZ play a vital, and underpinning role in funding a
significant part of the costs of these activities  e.g. travel costs, excess baggage, insurance,
security, all medical supplies (with the excess left for local hospitals) ,etc.  Interplast aims to
increase its surgical and training programs by about 50% in two years if it receives increased
funding. Donations by Rotary Clubs will directly determine the number of programs.

The objectives of the District 9810 Interplast Committee for 2017–2018 are to fund the cost
of a surgical program ($45,000) and training program ($10,000 to 35,000). Clubs may choose
to fully fund a program.

ROMAC – Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC)

This Rotary program in Australia and New Zealand has, to date, provided urgent medical
treatment to over 300 children from 20 developing countries.  The children are brought to
Australia as the level of medical treatment needed is simply not available in their home countries. 
ROMAC is generously assisted by many eminent Australian surgeons who donate their time free.

Operation Cleft (“A Smile for Life”)

Provides free cleft repair surgery for under-privileged children in Bangladesh (average cost
of $300 per operation) through the Operation Cleft Australia Foundation Trust (an international
project of the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central).
