Beaumaris Rotary Supports The Highlands Foundation

A chance meeting between the founder of The Highlands Foundation (HF), Kylie Stanley, and Beaumaris Rotarian PP Heather Chisholm led to Beaumaris Rotary making a commitment to support maternal and child health in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.
The rate of maternal and infant deaths in the Highlands is one of the highest in the world, and the HF’s mission is to reduce the death rate and improve health support for mothers and their new-born babies.  This is achieved through donations of various kinds including clothing for babies, infants and toddlers, health worker kits comprising surgical equipment, and financial donations to meet the $10,000 cost of sending a container to PNG.

Beaumaris Rotarians and partners engage in knitting woollen garments for new-borns thereby reducing the incidence of pneumonia. They also sew new skirts for mothers, provide toiletries and gifts.  These packs are incentives for the mothers to come to the birthing centre, thereby insuring they receive appropriate health care during the delivery.

A major fundraiser is planned for Sunday August 27th 2pm - 5pm to raise funds to:
  • send a container full of Medical equipment and Mother and Baby packs to East Sepik (approx $10,000AUD)
  • send 32 Health Worker Kits to Goroka ($2200AUD)
  • sponsor the refurbishment of a latent labour Ward in Goroka General Hospital
