On Wednesday 1st November, the Rotary Club of Belgrave received a talk from Toni Arfaras a StrokeSafe volunteer speaker trained in public speaking, and experienced in delivering life-saving messages about stroke. Toni has had a stroke herself. Toni presented the common information about stroke and its prevention, and also draw on her own personal experiences providing a very powerful discussion.
The Australian Stroke Foundation (www.strokefoundation.org.au) is keen to reach out to Rotary and spread awareness about stroke.
On Wednesday 1st November, the Rotary Club of Belgrave received a talk from Toni Arfaras a StrokeSafe volunteer speaker trained in public speaking, and experienced in delivering life-saving messages about stroke. Toni has had a stroke herself. Toni presented the common information about stroke and its prevention, and also draw on her own personal experiences providing a very powerful discussion.
Toni spoke for approximately 30 minutes including time for questions, although Toni said it can be varied to meet a clubs specific needs. Toni covered a range of issues that helped Belgrave better understand stroke and how it can be prevented.
This includes:
- What stroke is – What happens when someone is having a stroke and the different types of stroke.
- How to recognise the signs of stroke – Learn the vital FAST signs which will help you recognise when someone is having a stroke.
- What to do if someone is having a stroke – If you or someone else experiences the signs of stroke, no matter how long they last, call 000 immediately.
- How to prevent stroke – Steps that can be taken to better understand and reduce the risk of having a stroke.

Monash University is seeking volunteers to begin using new technology in detecting stroke brain injuries.
