Our District is located to the East of the city of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
"Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves."
Purpose of this website
A Rotary District is, essentially, an administrative unit charged with providing services to the Rotary clubs which are its members.  This site is dedicated to providing service to the clubs and Rotarians of D9810.  Although it is not primarily aimed at the general public, all are welcome to view these pages.

Last Saturday night saw the holding of the second Gala Night organised by the RC of Maroondah at the Karralyka Centre in Ringwood East.
As last year, the primary recipient of the event is Easter Health and their provision of Mental Health support. Last year, $25k was raised and it is hoped this year will be even more successful with a target of $30k. There were some 220 people in attendance including Eastern Health staff, sponsors, Rotarians and other supporters.
Major sponsors were Eastland and Orion Developments.
A special guest was Samuel Johnson speaking, amongst many other things, about his wonderful charity, Love Your Sister. Entertainment was provided by Bradley Marshall and the MC was Kylie Knight-Brown who did a fantastic job.

Join us for the District 9815 Rotaract Changeover!

We are thrilled to be celebrating the hard work and outstanding achievements of our clubs (Casey-Cardinia, Monash, Peninsula, and Whitehorse) over the past year. This event will be a fantastic opportunity to welcome our new board members and celebrate the beginning of a new chapter. Additionally, we will be hosting a Days for Girls event, including both a presentation and helping to assemble Days for Girls Kits.

Days for Girls increases access to menstrual care and education by developing global partnerships, cultivating Social Enterprises, mobilising volunteers and innovating sustainable solutions that shatter stigma and limitations for women and girls. These solutions include the Days for Girls Pad, a washable, reusable, beautiful menstrual health product that’s built to last. We'll be starting the new Rotaract year by helping assemble these Days for Girls Pads.

We would love to see you there!

June marks an important time for all of us as we recognize Alzheimer's and the significant impact it has on individuals, families, and communities.
At the Alzheimer's / Dementia Rotary Action Group (ADRAG), we are dedicated to raising awareness, providing support, and fostering hope for those affected by these challenging conditions.
Our mission at ADRAG is not just to bring attention to Alzheimer's but to mobilize action and resources that can lead to meaningful change. This month, we call upon you to join us in our efforts by supporting the initiatives and programs that ADRAG champions.
The Rotary Clubs of Emerald & District, Monbulk & District and Belgrave are hosting a free public information forum to discuss depression, anxiety and wellbeing issues affecting young people.
This major community service event will be aimed at raising public awareness of depression and anxiety in the youth of our areas. We also wish to inform, advise and show support to the families/carers of adolescents who may be at risk. We will provide information about where those requiring assistance can receive support in the Shires of Cardinia and Yarra Ranges and through other online platforms.
The Forum will be held at St Marks Church, Church Street, Emerald on Thursday July 25th at 6:15pm for a 6:30pm start and will conclude at approximately 9:15pm.
The event will be both face-to-face and on Zoom. Registration for the Forum will be through TryBooking.
Entry is free

As our year draws to a close I thought members would be interested in seeing how our our Clubs have utilised The Rotary Foundation through District Grants and Global Grants.
My thanks to Graham Richardson for preparing this report.
And my congratulations to all these Clubs for initiating these projects. Clearly, without funding from The Rotary Foundation these projects would not be possible.
It is vital that as Clubs and individual Rotarians, we continue to support our Foundation.

Note for a more detailed report on End Polio Now and District 9810, refer this update from David Grieve.

End Polio Report 2023/24 District 9810
Few Rotarians are aware that the End Polio campaign was the inspiration of an Australian, 1978-79 Rotary International President, Sir Clem Renouf. An interview with Sir Clem in 2015 can be viewed on YouTube. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=9yWjt7MO8h8). Therefore, it is an important project for Rotarians in Australia and District 9810 in particular as the DG’s partner, Dr Helen Parker’s project was End Polio Now. This raised $31,845!
In June 2023, as well as supporting Helen’s project we set two goals:

Donations Goal
Donations as 31/5/24
1
Raise $69,000 AUD
$94,436.52
2
Have 23 Clubs donate $1,600 ($US1,000)
21 Clubs*
*There were 2 clubs Knox and Box Hill/Burwood who donated just over $950US so apart from foreign exchange ‘issues’ the District met our target of 23 clubs.
The Rotary Clubs of Ferntree Gully and Rowville-Lysterfield run a social inclusion program for 12–18-year-olds in Knox or who go to school, work, volunteer or who have another strong connection to Ferntree Gully. The program supports and connects young people of all abilities in a safe inclusive environment.

Our club members Jennifer and Netania joined this year to support the fortnightly program and saw firsthand this opportunity for young people to meet and build friendships, gain new skills, build confidence, and have fun.
Deakin has countless unsung heroes who work tirelessly to strengthen our community. The Deakin Community Awards seek to celebrate these volunteers who give their time, skills and energy to community organisations, helping to make our local area a better place to live. The awards provide an opportunity to nominate an individual or community group that deserve recognition and our thanks for their significant contributions.

Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Maroondah for receiving the Group section of the Deakin Group Awards.
The Warrandyte Donvale Club held a Paul Harris birthday party on 16th April. Club members wore a variety of  Rotary merchandise to enhance the evening.
10 PHF’s were presented ranging from plus one sapphires to 2 rubies – the first in the history of the club.
A birthday cake was cut and enjoyed – it was a really fun night and a great way to celebrate.
Well it is not normal that we acknowledge new members to Rotary in this newsletter....but this is an exception.
Those members who attended the District Conference in Warrnambool will recall the great job one Dee Mason performed as co-MC. You may also recall that on the Sunday I announced that Dee had agreed to become a Rotarian.
Well, on June 5 Dee was inducted as a member of my Club, the Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central.

Dee is pictured at right with Club President Ron Brownlees and Dee's father, long time member John Mason OAM.

RI President Gordon called into Melbourne on his way back from RICON and attended the special lunch at Cape Schanck on Sunday June 2nd and the Mental Health Awareness breakfast on the following morning at the Frankston Arts Centre.
At both events was special guest speaker, Professor Pat McGorry.
My congratulations to the team from District 9820 under the leadership of DG Linda Humphries for these overwhelmingly successful events.
The luncheon was especially well attended by many members and partners from District 9810.

From late May to early June, I was lucky enough to attend two Rotary/ Rotaract conferences in Singapore. One of these was the Rotary International Convention (RICON), running from the 26th - 29th of May, and the latter the Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Convention (APRRC), running from the 1st to the 4th of June.

Having attended my first RICON in Melbourne last year, I was eagerly awaiting to experience the excitement and friendship of another convention. I can safely say my expectations were beyond exceeded. As a Rotaractor, RICON is a place to meet with hundreds of other keen Rotaractors from all over the world. As we make up such a small percentage of the overall Rotary membership, it’s invigorating and insightful to meet so many other people going through the same motions as myself.

This project gives security and hope to those who, for various reasons, have found themselves without a roof over their head. We are providing the accommodation for all  from rough sleepers to victims of family violence and those out of work and Homeless.
The Rotary Club Of Waverley first became involved when we heard of the properties obtained by the Victorian Government for the East Link project, which did not go ahead, had been given to the Salvation Army and Collingwood Football Club for homeless accommodation and thus was born the Magpies Nest Project.
There were 45 properties...

Preparing for Pilot launch
With only a few weeks to go until the next phase of our Regionalisation Pilot starts, our teams are in the final stages of preparation for the launch of the new operating model on 1 July 2024. There has been a lot of information flowing while the new model has been developing, and we encourage you to view the March 2024 Zone 8 Pilot Update, which is a great summary of where we are.
In this update:
  • An update from your Regional Council
  • An update on Rotary Community Leaders
  • An update on the Rotary Communities Nominee election
  • An update on Rotary Specialists
Mark Maloney was Rotary International President in 2019-2020.
He is currently the Chair Elect of The Rotary Foundation. His bio, along with other Trustees, can be found here.

Mark spoke at International Assembly in Florida in January 2024 outlining some goals he has set for the coming year when he will take on the role of  Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Rotary Foundation.

Here is a link to the video of that speech.

Rotary Southern Districts Shine On recognition award.

In the following article is a letter of thanks from the recipient of the above award, one Peter Talbot.

Peter’s life is built around his philosophy that community is just an extension of family and you should always look after each other. Peter was born with physical and issues as a result of birth trauma. Peter joined the Lions Club of Eltham 26 years ago, believing that he would always be a volunteer. However, he was persuaded to take on the Presidency and served for eleven years. Peter also volunteers for CAVE (Community Volunteers of Eltham) and is recognised for his community involvement'

A total of 21 Rotarians and partners from District 9810 attended the Rotary International Convention in Singapore in late May. The Convention was held in the facility adjacent to the spectacular Marina Bay Sands Hotel. I understand there were a total of some 15,000 attendees. The main plenary sessions were held in one room within the convention centre which could "only" accomodate 7,000 or so. Consequently, the opening session was split into two groups.
Then, each day would have one session in the morning followed a range of breakout sessions in the afternoon.
The House of Friendship was, as usual, spectacular. Many stands and exhibitions, entertainment and lots of connecting. Rotary in Action.
And guess who was one of the co MC's? None other than Haresh Ramchandani, the RIPPR for our Conference in Singapore.

I am aware of at least three people who ended up with Covid but can assure you we have recovered!

I encourage you to consider attending next year, in Calgary, Canada. Link here.
On the 17th of May, we held our annual Giant Monopoly Night. This night has become our biggest fundraiser of the year, and provides a very special opportunity for our friends, fellow Rotaractors and Rotarians, and family to come together.

This year we raised funds for Women for Women International, a non-for-profit that supports women and young girls impacted by war and conflict in a vast number of countries across the globe.
We are very proud to announce that through ticket sales, our raffle, our generous silent auction sponsors, and our ability to exchange Monopoly money for real money (or rather, bribe others), we raised $3500!
This night would not have been possible without the support of all Whitehorse Rotaractors, who put in a great deal of time to make this night as successful as it was.
After 6 days and 595km, the last of District 9810’s rides concluded where it started, back in Seymour, following a week of challenging riding, gourmet lunches, great fun and fellowship throughout the Greater Shepparton area.
The Last District 9810 Ride, 37 rides over 39 years and covering 30,471km’s along the way.

Rotary International President - Gordon McInally 2023/2024

Rotary International President-elect R. Gordon R. McInally called for members to capture the world's attention and lead the way toward possibilities far beyond our current expectations.

Gordon McInally, a member of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland, revealed the 2023-24 presidential theme, Create Hope in the World, during the Rotary International Assembly in Orlando, Florida, USA, on 9 January. He urged members to promote peace in troubled nations, help those affected by conflict, and maintain the momentum of initiatives begun by past leaders.

"The goal is to restore hope — to help the world heal from destructive conflicts and, in turn, to help us achieve lasting change for ourselves," McInally said at Rotary's annual training event for incoming district governors.

Rotary District 9810 has a new service called “CONNECTIONS” brought to you by District 9810 Technology Committee – TechCom.
CONNECTIONS is a new service for the members by the members of District 9810 and offers a free service for anyone wanting to advertise their business in Rotary.
This usually involves members scanning in their business cards and sending them through to the Webmaster along with their preferred business website and business category.

CONNECTIONS offers District 9810 members, family, and friends:
  • Publicise businesses and activities organized by connections on the district website
  • Invite Rotarians in the district to speak and store their videos for virtual meeting, or district workshops talking about their business and related service work
  • Seek out Rotarians who are outstanding in their professions or are enthusiastic about a hobby and encourage them to advertise on CONNECTIONS.

So, from jam to jumpers, cleaning to computers, we want your mainstream or hobby business added to CONNECTIONS:
